Just concluded a Dialogue Session with Ministry Of Health Malaysia on Drug Price Transparency which was chaired by Deputy Secretary General Health Dato Seri Norazman and the stakeholders in healthcare included APHM and MMA.

Here are some crucial points on drug pricing transparency with the Ministry of Health in my view:

1. Transparency is crucial, but the execution must be adjusted to eliminate disparities that could result in unwarranted complaints. The goal should be a transparent system that is simple for customers to understand.

2. Price control is not the best solution since openness gives customers more choices and freedom. Allowing the market to run with clear pricing may be more beneficial than stringent price regulations.

3. Overall, the initiative to increase drug price transparency is a beneficial step. It enables consumers to make more educated decisions about their prescriptions. However, the intricacies of implementation will be important to ensure that the system runs smoothly and without unexpected problems.

4. Continuous input and revision of transparency measures based on real-world experience are likely required to optimise the system over time. Collaboration among the government, business, and consumer groups can assist detect and handle any issues that occur.

The issue is to strike the correct balance between giving meaningful transparency and imposing unduly restrictive rules that could jeopardise drug availability and pricing.

An iterative, collaborative approach is perhaps the best way ahead.
